Item specifics
Description
This is a 2.42-inch OLED display module from Waveshare, featuring an ultra-narrow bezel design with an embedded SSD1309 driver chip supporting both 4-wire SPI and I2C communication interfaces. The module is equipped with a 128×64 pixel OLED panel with a display area of 55.01×27.49mm and pixel size of 0.4×0.4mm. It operates with both 3.3V and 5V logic levels via an onboard voltage translator, allowing direct interfacing with 5V devices such as Arduino. Available in white (2.42inch OLED Module) and yellow (2.42inch OLED Module (C)) versions, it comes with comprehensive development resources for Raspberry Pi, Raspberry Pi Pico, Arduino, STM32, ESP32, and Jetson Nano platforms, providing a high-contrast, low-power compact display solution for embedded displays, sensor data visualization, and IoT status panels.

Q: How do I switch between SPI and I2C communication modes?
A: Two optional soldering resistors on the top-left back of the module select the communication mode. Factory default is 4-wire SPI (resistors connected to SPI position). For I2C, connect both resistors to the I2C position and wire DIN to host SDA and CLK to host SCL. The DEV_Config.h file must also be modified after switching.
Q: How is the I2C address configured?
A: In I2C mode, the DC pin selects the I2C address: DC low sets the 7-bit I2C address to 0x3C; DC high sets it to 0x3D.
Q: Can this module connect directly to a Raspberry Pi?
A: Yes. The onboard voltage translator ensures compatibility with 3.3V and 5V logic, allowing direct connection to Raspberry Pi GPIO via the 7-pin cable. Raspberry Pi users must enable SPI or I2C in raspi-config. Waveshare provides example programs for BCM2835, WiringPi, lgpio, and Python libraries.
Q: Is a connection cable included?
A: Yes. The package includes 1× 2.42-inch OLED Display Module and 1× GH1.25 7-pin cable (JST-GH to Dupont).
Q: Is the SSD1309 driver chip compatible with SSD1306 libraries?
A: In most cases, yes. The SSD1309 and SSD1306 have highly similar instruction sets, and most SSD1306 libraries can be used with the SSD1309. However, using Waveshare's official example code is recommended for optimal compatibility.
